The Heterofocus wood-burning steel sculpture in a dark stone room, letterbox fire lit, flat flue column rising to the ceiling

Heterofocus

A sculpture that burns.

Focus · Dominique Imbert, 1988

Fire, as industrial sculpture.

A 1400 mm blade of waxed steel with a letterbox of flame — “resolutely industrial,” in the maker’s own telling.

I

The angular swell

A flat steel column that swells, off-centre and angular, to hold an 830 × 300 mm letterbox of fire — then tapers away to a narrow foot.

II

Waxed raw steel

“Raw Polished Steel finish with visible welded seams” — the brochure’s words. 3 mm plate, waxed rather than painted, built LEFT or RIGHT to suit the room.

III

Une exclusivité de Focus

An exclusive of the house since 1988 — and it still posts serious numbers: 39,240 BTU/hr and 78.6% efficiency on the listing’s own sheet.

Quick answers

The three things everyone asks.

Will it fit my room?

It wants air: 24″ to the sides and back, 36″ of clear floor in front of the fire, and non-combustible floor protection (R≥2.13) reaching 16″ out in the US — 18″ in Canada. Ceiling minimum is 8 ft by the manual; the listing’s 274 cm is the supplied flue package. Send us a photo of your room and we’ll confirm placement before you spend a dollar.

What chimney does it need?

A factory-built class-A chimney — UL 103HT in the US, ULC S629 in Canada — on a nominal 8″ natural-draft flue. The listing says 203 mm, the manual measures 205 mm inside: same 8″ system, and we quote both on principle.

Who installs a fire like this?

A WETT-certified crew — ours. A sculpture hangs or stands to the millimetre, so we frame, clear and flue it to the maker’s manual, and your annual sweep is one call to us.
