The Gyrofocus suspended wood fireplace burning in the black studio void, saucer hearth open, flue rising out of frame

Focus · Dominique Imbert, 1968

The world’s first hanging fireplace.

“Revolutionary in both design and technical innovation” — the maker’s own words for the 1968 original that hangs from the ceiling and turns to face any seat in the room. It comes two ways now: the wood original, or the Gyrofocus Gas with ceramic logs and a remote in your hand.

I

The full circle

It pivots a full 360° on its flue — the world’s first to do it — and the gas version still turns 100° on its concealed line. Aim the fire at the sofa tonight and the dinner table tomorrow.

II

Le grand manitou

“The boss, the top dog, the big cheese” — the maker’s own swagger, earned over six decades. A 1250 mm saucer of steel with a wide-open mouth of flame.

III

Black, or white

Matt black as standard; white with a black interior on order. Dual-certified for Canada and hanging in showrooms on both sides of the Atlantic since 1968.

Specifications

The wood original’s numbers below. The Gyrofocus Gas keeps the 1250 mm saucer and runs 17,000–54,000 BTU/hr on natural gas (11,000–42,000 on propane) with remote and electronic ignition, pivots 100°, wants a 10 ft 7″ ceiling, and is certified ANSI Z21.50 · CSA 2.22.

Quick answers

The three things everyone asks.

Can it really turn all the way around?

Yes — the Gyrofocus was the world’s first suspended fireplace to pivot a full 360°, and it still does. It hangs from its flue on a ceiling suspension plate, so the floor stays clear: just a non-combustible pad below (Ø86″ in Canada for a rotating install) and 9 ft of ceiling.

What chimney does it need?

A factory-built HT chimney — UL 103 in the US, ULC S629 in Canada — on a nominal 8″ natural-draft flue, at least 14 ft of it floor to cap. The listing says 203 mm inside, the manual measures 205 mm: same 8″ system, and we quote both on principle.

Who installs a hanging fireplace?

A WETT-certified crew — ours. The suspension plate alone weighs 145 lbs and carries the whole fire, so the ceiling structure gets engineered first, then we hang, flue and balance it to the maker’s manual. Your annual sweep after that is one call to us.
